Undecided

It's been decided that we will drive to Alabama this summer. What hasn't been decided is what route we will take. This is going to be one of the most exciting parts. I've been to Montana, Idaho, Oregon, California, and Arizona but the rest is uncharted territory. So.....we get to choose. The difficult part is that it generally takes the same amount of time (30 + hours) no matter what route we look into. If we travel through North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and down it takes the same time as if we traveled through Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri and on to AL. We could even cut through Utah, Colorado, Kansas and Arkansas in the same 30+ hours. We ruled out the southern route, something about Arizona and New Mexico in August that just doesn't sound quite right to the sensible side of travel. And so here we sit discussing our options. Where to go, what to see? What route would you choose?

  1. Hey Steph...
When I moved out here to Vermont, we obviously took the northern route, but in planning the trip, I was looking at places along the way that I wanted to stop at. We did Mt. Rushmore, Wall Drug, and Niagara Falls. It was fun to have those things to look forward to...so maybe figure out what you want to see and go that route?

If you ever want thoughts about moving somewhere brand new and not knowing anyone, let me know! :)

    1. Jessica, I didn't know you were living in Vermont. Any and all advice about moving/driving cross country would be welcome.

  2. Indiana! Drive through Indiana! Okay it's not a direct route, but still. My friend and I drove through MO, KS and CO to get to Denver, and KS was honestly one of the most boring states I've ever been through or to. I've been through a lot of states but that was awfully boring, at least in WY there's no speed limit when you're in the middle of nowhere. We did see a sign for a Bible and Rifle Museum though. Point is I found KS worth missing out on.

  3. We were thinking Indiana too :) Dan's brother goes to school there and you live there, sounds like a great place to stop. And good advice about Kansas!

  4. You are smart to avoid Arizona in August! Driving across Nebraska, Wyoming or Kansas is a very bad idea. Sooooo boring. Jessica's idea of scoping out stuff to see on the way is a great idea. When we drove from Indiana to Arizona, we stopped in Mansfield, MO, at the homestead of Laura and Almanzo Wilder. Did you grow up reading those books/watching that show? Such a great place to visit!
If it was us, I'd choose the ND, MN, WI, IL route and meet up with Josh and Michelle somewhere in Illinois.
What are you going to be doing in Alabama?

  5. Thanks Denise, Mansfield sounds like an interesting place to stop, maybe we'll put that on the list to consider. The northern route is in the lead today, maybe a stopover in Glacier National Park and then driving down to Indiana. We mapped out a route today, going to be a lot of fun!
