State of Emergency

The Governor of Alabama has declared a state of emergency, he has the National Guard on standby. Why you might ask? It snowed. 4 cm today. Gasp!

It took us 2.5 hours to get home today (our usual journey is 15 minutes). All of North Central Alabama released their schools at 11 a.m. and business closed all at the same time creating absolute mayhem for everyone. Most people reacted out of fear, driving their 4 wheel drive vehicles at 5mph down the snowless road with their hazards on as they talked on their cell phone. I will never quite understand this place.

Today I am glad to be home from work early, for more than one reason....

This is exactly how much snow it takes to send us home early from work. Can't see it?
Don't worry we couldn't really either.

Greener on the other side.

On a recent trip to Washington (State that is) we discovered a few things that Alabama does not have.

Roadside libraries. That's right, a borrowing system right on the street. How clever. If I had a house I think I'd be inclined to start my own little mailbox library. How about you? A little too close to the front door maybe? But such a nice idea, borrowing, sharing, neighbors. It felt very 'northwest' to see this little treasure.

Alabama does not have ferry boats or....

Tall buildings

But they do have a serious shortage of sidewalks. I love sidewalks, the idea of walking without the fear of being hit by a car brings joy to my soul.

Okay work with me, way off in the distance.....Alabama certainly does not have these, or anything like it.
